Randy
Johnson is an award-winning old-time fiddler and
dynamic singer who honed his fiddle skills playing for
dances in Ohio and Western Pennsylvania, touring as the
fiddler for Pittsburgh's Coal Country Cloggers. Randy,
who also plays guitar, banjo, and mandolin, has performed
at such venues as the Philadelphia Folk Festival, Black
Mountain's LEAF festival, and has been an Artist-in-Residence
for the Ohio Arts Council. Currently a member of Waking
Up Tillie and the Carolina
Jug Stompers (with Ron Cole, W.B. Reid, and Luke Faust),
Randy's previous bands include the Chestnut Hillbillies
and the Blue Ridge Mountain Minstrels, with recordings

| Over the past
35 years, audiences have appreciated Pete
Peterson's compelling live performances and extensive
knowledge of old-time songs and their historical context.
His three-finger banjo style is derived from the playing
of Charlie Poole and several classical banjoists of the
late 19th and early 20th centuries. Pete, who recorded
for the Heritage and Marimac record labels, is also a
practitioner of Maybelle Carter-style guitar-picking and
an extraordinary harmony singer. Formerly in the Well
Tempered String Band, Pete is now a member of Waking Up
Tillie, Orpheus
Supertones (with Walt Koken and Clare Milliner), and
Ben Borscht and the Beats (with Drew Smith, Mike Resnick
& Susan Sterngold), and he sings gospel and early
country duets with Kellie Allen. |

An accomplished
old-time singer and sought-after backup guitarist,
Kellie Allen grew up in
a large family of singers and musicians from Kansas. She
started playing old-time tunes with her fiddler brother,
Greg Allen (a member of the Euphoria
String Band) while she was in her teens and has
been singing with her family ever since she can remember.
Formerly in the Well Tempered String Band (Lutra 122 and
244), Kellie is now a member of Waking Up Tillie, the
Orpheus
Supertones (an old-time string band with Walt Koken
and Clare Milliner), and sings gospel and early country duets
with Pete Peterson. |

While in high
school, Terry Burtyk
went out and bought a Sears 5 string banjo after hearing
that sparkling sound on a recording. She promptly broke
3 strings while trying to tune it. Eventually, however,
Terry learned the old-time claw-hammer style while
living in Lexington, Virginia. Currently she plays bass
with her friends in Waking Up Tillie, and sings when
allowed.
Terry has also played with string bands from Boston, MA
to Durham, NC, including the Bunker Mountain Fiddlers,
Dr. Scantlin’s Red Hot Peppers, the Expensive
Haircuts, the Ubiquitones, Cluckin’ A, the Carolina
Cut-Ups, and the Highland Hummingbirds. Terry played
banjo on the Rebel Records recording "Southern
Soul", released in 1993 by Galax bred musician
Jimmy Arnold. In addition to playing with winning bands
at various fiddler’s conventions, she garnered
a fourth place ribbon in clawhammer banjo from the Galax
Old Fiddlers Convention. Terry enjoys touring with Waking
Up Tillie as well as playing for dances and other
events around her home in Durham, NC. |
